The highly anticipated period dramaThe Dream Maker officially premiered on January 10, 2026, on CCTV and Tencent Video.
The series has quickly gained attention for its inspiring story rooted in real historical events and its star-studded cast.
Directed by Sun Hao and written by chief screenwriter Yuan Keping, the drama stars Zhao Liying and Huang Xiaoming alongside Chen Minghao and Zhu Yuanyuan.
The production is a joint effort by China Central Television, Beijing Bona Film Group, and Tencent Video, adapted from Zhu Xiaojun’s award-winning non-fiction work China’s Farmer-Built City.
Set in the early 1980s, the story unfolds in Pingchuan County during the establishment of Yuehai Town, a bold initiative aimed at accelerating regional development.
Zhao Liying portrays Li Qiuping, a principled and forward-thinking grassroots official, while Huang Xiaoming plays Zheng Decheng, a determined leader who shares her vision for change.
Guided by the belief that “a city should be built by its people” the two officials take advantage of China’s reform and opening-up policies to pioneer an unprecedented development model.
Without relying on state funding, they mobilize thousands of farmers to pool resources and construct a modern city from reclaimed coastal land.
What begins as an ambitious experiment ultimately becomes a landmark achievement in China’s urban development history, transforming the lives of countless families.
Blending lighthearted storytelling with passionate realism, The Dream Maker presents more than just the rise of a city.
