Overseasidol.com — GMMTVhas officially announced the cancellation of the series “Replay” following extensive internal review and discussions with the writer and all involved parties.
In a statement dated November 28, 2025, the company confirmed that the decision was mutually agreed upon.
GMMTV also shared that new and appropriate projects will be developed for the cast members, with further information to be released once planning and pre-production are completed.
The series adaptation was written by Julalumpa, a figure whose previous works on online fiction platforms had drawn significant attention.
To understand why the cancellation of “Replay” has sparked widespread reactions, many fans revisited the background of the writer’s earlier journey on the platform Joylada.
Joylada, a popular online fiction hub, has long maintained a strict rule prohibiting monetization of fanfiction.
The rule is intended to preserve fan-created works as a non-commercial space. However, past complaints from users suggested that one of the writer’s earlier works had been placed behind a paywall through platform loopholes, reigniting debates over the ethics of monetizing fan-created content.
Public concern grew further because many readers believed the story incorporated elements strongly resembling real artists such as name formats, personality traits, and pair dynamics raising questions about the unauthorized use of a public figure’s likeness for commercial gain.
Critics argued that this exceeded the realm of “inspiration” and instead bordered on the commercial exploitation of real identities.
The debate intensified when the fanfic-based story was later said to have been revised, renamed, and repackaged as an “original novel”.
This move left many early supporters feeling overlooked and disrespected.
The controversy eventually had notable effects on Joylada itself, with declining user trust and a wave of readers abandoning the platform.
Many people described the aftermath as one of the platform’s biggest crises.
With GMMTV artists now being linked to a project associated with this long-standing issue, fans have voiced renewed concerns.
For them, the matter is not a trivial dispute but one tied to creative ethics, artist protection, and the credibility of the entertainment industry.
