Overseasidol.com — The urban emotional drama Loving Strangers officially premiered on Youku on January 10, 2026, drawing attention for its poignant storytelling and strong lead performances by Mark Chao and Zhang Zifeng, with Zhang Xincheng appearing in a special role.
The series explores how two emotionally burdened individuals find healing and renewed strength through an unexpected connection.
Directed by Han Tian and written by Yu Xiaoqian along with Zhou Qiao, Sun Wancheng, and Zhang Li, the drama was first unveiled in May 2023 through a concept poster.
Originally titled Thank You for Hearing Me, the series underwent several title changes before settling on Loving Strangers.
Ahead of its release, the total episode count was adjusted from 30 to 28, and the drama officially received its distribution license in October 2025.
Filmed entirely on location in Chongqing, the series makes full use of the city’s distinctive landscape.
Landmarks such as the Yangtze River cable car, monorails passing through buildings, and bustling street hotpot scenes help ground the story in a vivid, realistic urban setting.
The production team adopted a stripped-down visual style and naturalistic costume design to enhance authenticity and emotional depth.
The story centers on Jiang Jiaqi, portrayed by Mark, a man from a family shaped by China’s Third Front Construction migration history, who is facing both a failing marriage and workplace suppression.
Zhang Zifeng plays Zhou Yu’an, a young woman struggling with heavy debts while caring for her paralyzed grandmother.
Their lives intersect through a bribery case, drawing them into each other’s worlds.
Despite a significant age gap, Jiaqi and Yu’an share a deep emotional alignment. What begins as emotional distance gradually evolves into mutual understanding and support.
Zhou Yu’an remains sincere and outspoken as she enters the workforce, refusing to compromise her values, while Jiaqi rediscovers purpose and resilience through their growing bond.
Executive producer Dun Qi described the drama as a work designed to spark emotional resonance and spiritual connection with viewers.
