Overseasidol.com — Disney’s highly anticipated animated sequel, “Zootopia 2,” premiered on Wednesday, November 26, and immediately delivered an extraordinary box office performance in China.
On its opening day, the film earned 228 million yuan with a seat occupancy rate of 14.9%. Day two brought in 144 million yuan with 9.1% occupancy, and day three climbed to 283 million yuan with occupancy increasing to 17%.
By Saturday, its fourth day in theaters, the film’s momentum surged even further. The number of screenings increased to over 360,000, setting a new record for the most daily screenings ever for a single film in Chinese cinema history.
Controlling 77.8% of nationwide showtimes, “Zootopia 2” generated an astonishing 738 million yuan in one day, making it the first imported film to surpass 100 million USD in a single-day gross in China.
The film attracted 18.76 million moviegoers that day, surpassing the 17.32 million recorded by “Nezha 2” on its seventh day.
With this, “Zootopia 2” now holds the record for the highest single-day audience count for an animated film in China, and ranks second overall, right behind “Detective Chinatown 3,” which reached 20.41 million on its opening day.
After just four days, the total box office of “Zootopia 2” has exceeded 1.4 billion yuan, becoming the first imported movie in nearly three years since “Avatar 2” to cross the 1-billion-yuan mark.
Given the film’s exceptional trajectory, industry trackers have significantly revised their predictions: Maoyan now estimates a final gross of roughly 4.3 billion yuan, while Lighthouse projects over 4 billion yuan.
