Renowned Japanese lyricist and music producer Akimoto Yasushi has opened up about the creative strategy behind several Nogizaka46 songs that once faced strong criticism from fans.
Speaking on the June 18 episode of TOKYO SPEAKEASY, Akimoto joined singer-songwriter Yumi Matsutoya for a candid discussion about his approach to producing music for idol groups.
Akimoto explained that creating songs for a popular idol group differs greatly from writing for solo artists.
He described the relationship between producers and fans as similar to a pitcher and batter in baseball.
According to the veteran producer, he intentionally releases songs that challenge fansâ expectations.
Tracks such as Ohitorisama Tengoku and Biryani received significant backlash when they were first introduced.
âFans reacted strongly and questioned why those songs were made for Nogizaka46,â Akimoto recalled.
Despite the criticism, the 68-year-old producer believes these unexpected releases play an important role in maintaining the group’s musical momentum.
He compared them to strategic pitches in baseball that set up a stronger finishing move.
Akimoto explained that controversial songs can heighten anticipation and make fans appreciate future releases even more.
He cited Same Numbers as an example of a âdecisive pitchâ that becomes more impactful after fans experience something unexpected. (Overseasidol.com)
