His memorial service will be held on February 1 in Hong Kong.

Born into a legendary martial arts family, Yuen Cheung-Yan was the son of Yuen Siu-Tien, one of Hong Kong’s pioneering action choreographers and actors, and the younger brother of Yuen Woo-Ping, globally acclaimed as one of the greatest action directors of all time.

From a young age, Yuen trained in martial arts alongside his family and became a core member of the influential Yuen Clan, which played a major role in shaping Hong Kong action cinema.

Throughout his career, Yuen Cheung-Yan left a lasting impression both on-screen and behind the scenes.

While he often appeared in memorable supporting roles, his most iconic performance came in Stephen Chow’s “Kung Fu Hustle”, where he portrayed the mysterious beggar who sells the legendary Buddha Palm manual.

The character remains one of the most beloved figures in modern Chinese action-comedy films.

Behind the camera, Yuen Cheung-Yan contributed to the choreography of hundreds of movies, designing breathtaking action sequences that blended power, creativity, and storytelling.

His work significantly influenced the evolution of martial arts cinema and helped bring Hong Kong action films to international audiences.
