Chinese actor Li Xian attracted widespread attention after appearing as a special opening guest during the World Cup group-stage match between Spain and Saudi Arabia on June 21.
His appearance marked a significant milestone, making him the first mainland Chinese artist to participate in an official World Cup match-opening ceremony.
However, the ceremony turned out to be quite different from what many fans had expected.
Viewers following the live broadcast noticed that China Central Television (CCTV) did not air any dedicated footage of Li Xian’s appearance.
Videos shared by fans attending the match later revealed what actually happened.
In the clips, Li Xian was seen carrying the official match ball to a designated pedestal near the players’ tunnel.
After placing the ball on the stand, he waved to the crowd and posed for photos before leaving the field.
The moment quickly sparked discussions online, as many fans had assumed he would perform a ceremonial kickoff from the center circle before the match began.
Adidas, an official tournament partner, had previously explained the responsibilities of match-opening guests on social media.
According to the brand, the guest enters the players’ tunnel before kickoff under the guidance of FIFA officials and carries the official match ball to a designated display stand.
The guest also has the opportunity to witness the players’ entrance, national anthem ceremonies, and watch the match from a VIP area once the pre-game event concludes. (Overseasidol.com)
