Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou has once again made history after receiving the Outstanding Contribution to Chinese Cinema Award at the 2026 Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF).
The honor marks a significant milestone in Zhang Yimou’s career.
It is the second time he has received the prestigious award, making him the first filmmaker ever to be honored twice in the category. His previous recognition came 20 years ago.
During the award ceremony, Zhang expressed gratitude and reflected on his more than four decades in the film industry.
He said that his passion for cinema has remained unchanged throughout his career.
The acclaimed director emphasized that his commitment has always been centered on creating meaningful films and telling authentic Chinese stories.
According to Zhang, sharing the experiences and emotions of ordinary people through cinema remains one of his greatest motivations as a filmmaker.
Rather than viewing the award as the culmination of his achievements, Zhang Yimou described it as a new beginning.
He expressed his hope to continue producing high-quality films and bringing compelling Chinese stories to audiences in the years ahead.
