The 28th Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) officially opened on June 12, 2026, in Shanghai, China.
This year’s edition has attracted significant attention after the absence of Japanese movies and related programs from the festival lineup.
Unlike previous years, the festival is not hosting its traditional Japan Film Week, a program usually dedicated to showcasing new Japanese movies.
In addition, no Japanese productions are scheduled for screening, and no Japanese judges have been invited to serve on the festival jury.
The development has sparked discussions among film fans and industry observers.
Some believe the absence of Japanese participation may be linked to recent tensions in China-Japan relations, although organizers have not released any official statement regarding the matter.
Japanese cinema has long been a popular part of the Shanghai International Film Festival.
During last year’s event, special screenings were held to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the iconic anime franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Meanwhile, Summer on the Sand, starring Japanese actor Joe Odagiri, received the Jury Grand Prix award.
A source familiar with the festival reportedly expressed disappointment over the lack of Japanese films this year, noting that many industry professionals and moviegoers have a strong appreciation for Japanese cinema.
Despite the absence of Japanese entries, the 2026 Shanghai International Film Festival will screen approximately 420 films from around the world.
The event will conclude on June 21 with the presentation of the prestigious Golden Goblet Awards, including the award for Best Film. (Overseasidol.com)
