Chinese actor Shawn Dou recently reflected on his acting debut in Under the Hawthorn Tree during an interview on July 7, 2026.
He said the film, directed by Zhang Yimou, gave him an excellent start by introducing him to audiences across China.
However, Shawn described the opportunity as a “double-edged sword”.
He explained that beginning his career with such a high-profile project also created enormous expectations for everything he did afterward.
The actor admitted that he has experienced several setbacks throughout his career.
Even so, he said he has learned to accept those moments and does not see them as something to fear.
Shawn Dou added that the pressure after his debut was intense because many people closely watched every career move he made.
