Overseasidol.com — The highly anticipated action-fantasy movie “A Writer’s Odyssey 2”, directed by Lu Yang, premiered on October 1, 2025, in mainland China.
In Japan, the film will open on October 3 with Chinese, Japanese, and English subtitles.
The movie is the sequel to the 2021 box office hit A Writer’s Odyssey.
Starring Deng Chao, Dong Zijian, Lei Jiayin, Wang Shengdi, Ding Chengxin, and Wang Yanlin, with special appearances by Zhang Zhen, Xin Zhilei, Guo Jingfei, and Chang Yuan, the film uses IMAX cameras to capture 26% more imagery than standard versions.
Development began in 2021, with the script taking nearly two years to complete. Director Lu Yang promised a more exciting and visually stunning experience, while screenwriter Li Zelin built the story around a central philosophical question.
The plot follows novelist Lu Kongwen (played by Dong Zijian), who falls into despair and tries to destroy his book Killing God.
His fictional characters come alive, dragging both the real and fantasy worlds into crisis.
Deng Chao returns as the Red-Haired Demon in a new form, threatening to invade reality through dual-world traversal.
Together with Tong Hu (Lei Jiayin) and Xiao Juzi (Wang Shengdi), Kongwen launches a final showdown.
Ahead of its release, the studio unveiled a series of posters, trailers, and a director’s featurette, highlighting nearly 3,000 VFX shots and a Cloud City ten times larger than in the first movie.
Pre-sales opened on September 23, breaking records as it sold the very first National Day holiday ticket and grossed 3.33 million yuan on the first day.
On September 29, the film held a star-studded premiere in Beijing. By October 5, the box office had already surpassed 200 million yuan.
Today, a new “Burning Obsession” trailer was released, showcasing the emotional journey of Red-Haired Demon and Kongwen as they struggle against fate.
The film continues to dominate theaters, drawing praise for its gripping performances and grand-scale visual spectacle.
