Overseasidol.com — The upcoming crime-action movie Cold War 1994 is officially scheduled to hit theaters in China on May 1, 2026.
Serving as a prequel to the widely acclaimed “Cold War” series, the movie explores the origins of a major conflict that shaped the storyline of its predecessors.
Directed and written by Leung Lok-man, the movie features a star-studded cast led by Daniel Wu, Terrance Lau, and Wu Kang-ren.
Veteran actors including Sean Lau, Chow Yun-fat, Aaron Kwok, and Louis Koo also make notable appearances, adding significant weight to the production.

Set in Hong Kong in 1994, the movie centers on a high-profile kidnapping case involving a wealthy tycoon, which triggers widespread instability and threatens the city’s financial standing.
During the investigation, police officer Li Wenbin finds himself navigating a web of internal conflicts within the force, while dealing with pressure from political figures, business elites, and criminal organizations.
The narrative unfolds through a dual timeline, connecting events from 1994 with developments in 2017, effectively building a deeper and more layered storyline.
This structure not only enriches character backgrounds but also bridges the gap between the prequel and the original films.
Since its initial announcement in 2024, the project has generated strong anticipation.
The first poster was unveiled in 2025 and showcased at the Cannes Film Festival, followed by teaser releases that heightened public interest.
The official trailer released in March 2026 further highlighted the film’s scale and intensity.
