Overseasidol.com — Thailand’s film industry is set to deliver another highly anticipated horror project with Wooden Buddha, a supernatural thriller that blends traditional Isan folklore with a modern storyline.
The film has already generated strong buzz thanks to its prominent production team and star-studded cast.
The project is produced by Somruek “Panna” Rungboon of Panichai Studio Co., Ltd., known for his involvement in legendary Thai action films such as Ong-Bak and Tom-Yum-Goong.
Directing duties are handled by two rising filmmakers: Associate Professor Dr. Niyom Wongpongkham, Vice President for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy at Khon Kaen University, and Assistant Professor Dr. Preecha Sakorn, a lecturer in Communication Arts at Mahasarakham University.
A grand blessing ceremony was recently held in front of the Ganesha Shrine at CentralWorld in Bangkok, marking the official start of production and seeking good fortune for the cast and crew.
Phra Mai follows the story of Paeng, a female archaeologist left burdened with massive debt after her father mysteriously disappears in a dense forest during an oil exploration expedition.
As she searches for answers, she begins to suspect that her father’s disappearance may be linked to an ancient artifact known as “Phra Mai”.
While some believe the object is sacred and auspicious, others warn that it carries a deadly curse.
As Paeng digs deeper, she uncovers a disturbing pattern: the artifact had circulated among her father and his associates, each of whom later met a horrifying fate.
Determined to uncover the truth, Paeng finds herself drawn into a terrifying chain of events that quickly spirals beyond her control.
The film marks the first big-screen pairing of popular stars Pon Nawasch and Mook Mookda.
Mookda portrays Paeng, the determined archaeologist seeking the truth behind her father’s disappearance and the cursed artifact.
Pon plays Ek, a passionate young police officer and heir to an oil drilling business, who was close to Paeng’s father.
At the father’s request before his disappearance, Ek helps Paeng investigate the mystery.
