Overseasidol.com — A first-instance court ruling involving a copyright ownership and infringement dispute between Shanghai Siba Culture Media Group (STAR48) and a magazien has recently been made public.
It’s shedding light on the contractual relationship between the company and popular Chinese artist Ju Jingyi.
According to the facts and legal arguments presented by Siba Media, the company signed an exclusive artist contract with Ju Jingyi on August 16, 2013.
This agreement was later reinforced by a supplementary contract dated September 10, 2018, which confirmed Siba Media as Ju Jingyi’s sole and exclusive management agency.
Under the terms of the agreement, SiBa Media claims exclusive rights to use Ju Jingyi’s name, likeness, image, and voice.
The exclusive management period is set to span 20 years, from August 16, 2013, to August 15, 2033.
In the latest development, the defendant newspaper raised an objection to the court’s jurisdiction over the case.
The court ruled that the jurisdictional objection was valid, accepting the challenge and affecting how the case will proceed.
The dispute has attracted public attention, especially as it follows earlier legal controversies involving Ju Jingyi.
Previously, her hairstylist filed a lawsuit against SiBa Media, seeking payment for outstanding service fees.
Together, these cases have reignited broader discussions about artist contracts, management rights, and intellectual property protection within China’s entertainment industry.
