Overseasidol.com — Chinese actor Gao Hanyu recently shared a frightening story from the early days of his career during an appearance on “Living in the Air”.
He revealed that while filming a romantic reality show in Cambodia, he got separated from the crew and ended up lost in a foreign country, unable to speak the language and overcome with fear.
Gao explained that several artists were originally scheduled to travel together, but due to last-minute changes, he had to fly alone.
“It was my first time going abroad,” he said. “I was supposed to fly to Siem Reap but accidentally got off in Phnom Penh instead,”.
At first, he didn’t realize the mistake until he called his family to check in, and his mother told him he was in the wrong city.
To make matters worse, his phone suddenly lost service right after that call. Standing outside the airport as other Chinese travelers left one by one, Gao said panic quickly set in.
While stranded, a man who spoke Mandarin approached and offered to help. In his confusion, Gao followed the stranger to a nearby hotel.
But once inside, he discovered that the room door couldn’t be locked. “I had to use a chair to block the door,” he recalled.
With no way to contact anyone, Gao decided to record what he called his ‘final message’ to his mother.
“I told her, ‘Mom, I think this might be the end for me. I may not make it back. I’m sorry for all the mistakes I’ve made,’” he said with a faint smile.
Fortunately, Gao later calmed down and managed to ask the hotel staff for help. He used the hotel’s phone to reach the production team and got a map to guide him.
Despite not speaking the same language as the local driver who picked him up, Gao eventually made it safely to his destination, a harrowing but unforgettable lesson from his early career.
