Overseasidol.com — Renowned actress-turned-filmmaker Shu Qi attended the annual Hong Kong Film Directors’ Guild Awards 2026 on March 22, appearing not as a performer but as a director.
She was honored with the Best New Director award for her first self-written and self-directed film, Girl.
After receiving the award, Shu Qi expressed humility in her media interview, saying she felt that someone else might have been more deserving of the recognition.
Her candid remarks quickly became a talking point among entertainment observers.
“Girl” marks Shu Qi’s directorial debut and is described as a deeply personal project inspired by her own life experiences.
The screenplay reportedly took around ten years to develop, reflecting themes of growth, emotional journeys, and self-discovery.
The film has also gained international attention, earning a place in the main competition at the Venice Film Festival.
Furthermore, it brought Shu the Best Director honor at the 30th edition of the Busan International Film Festival.
