Chinese authorities have arrested 12 suspects accused of running an online extortion scheme that spread negative rumors about celebrities and TV dramas to demand protection payments.
Chinese police have dismantled an online extortion network accused of targeting celebrities, talent agencies, and television drama producers by manipulating public opinion on social media.
The operation, carried out on June 16, resulted in the arrest of 12 suspects led by a man surnamed Li.
Investigators found that the group operated an MCN company controlling multiple Weibo and WeChat accounts with more than 10 million followers.
Authorities said the organization hired writers to compile celebrity gossip before using AI technology and influential social media accounts to spread negative stories, particularly during the broadcast of popular dramas and variety shows.
After the online controversy gained attention, production companies and talent agencies reportedly contacted the group to request the removal of the posts.
The suspects allegedly demanded payment for so-called “drama protection” services, which included publishing positive content, deleting negative posts, and refraining from posting further criticism.
Police also revealed that several celebrities, agencies, and production companies had previously filed defamation lawsuits against the organization.
Investigators believe the group’s activities disrupted entertainment promotions and harmed the online media environment. (Overseasidol.com)
