Hong Kong crime comedy Dog Day Evening officially premiered in mainland China on June 27, 2026, following its Hong Kong theatrical release on June 18, 2026.
Blending dark comedy with social satire, the film has attracted attention for its humorous yet thought-provoking take on the frustrations of modern customer service.
Directed and written by Mak Tin Shu, the film is jointly produced by Universe Entertainment, the Hong Kong Film Development Fund, the Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency, AMTD Digital Media, and several other production companies.
The cast features Michael Ning, Fish Liew, Rachel Leung, Locker Lam, Kaki Sham, Tse Kwan Ho, and veteran actress Paw Hee Ching.
The story follows a television subscriber known as K Jai, who becomes increasingly frustrated after repeatedly failing to cancel his monthly subscription.
Driven to desperation, he storms the headquarters of “Happy TV” with a gun and takes several hostages in an attempt to resolve his complaint.
One of the hostages, Ringo, reluctantly joins K Jai in navigating the company’s complicated customer service system.
Instead of finding a quick solution, they encounter endless call waiting, automated responses, employees shifting responsibility, and layers of bureaucracy that turn a simple cancellation request into a chaotic and absurd journey.
Through its clever mix of crime, comedy, and satire, Dog Day Evening highlights the inefficiencies of modern service systems and the everyday frustrations experienced by consumers.
The film uses humor to expose how complicated procedures can escalate ordinary problems into extraordinary situations. (Overseasidol.com)
