Overseasidol.com — Taiwanese actor Darren Wang is facing legal consequences after being found guilty in a case involving attempted draft evasion and illegal access to personal data.
The New Taipei District Court has sentenced him and his girlfirend to six months in prison for violating data protection laws.
According to prosecutors, Wang reportedly paid approximately NT$3.6 million to an illegal group led by a man surnamed Chen, hoping to bypass mandatory military health examinations.
However, unbeknownst to him, the group leader had already been detained in a separate case, causing the arrangement to fail.
Frustrated over the failed deal and financial loss, Wang sought assistance from an acquaintance to track down Chen.
During this process, a police officer was allegedly involved in unlawfully accessing personal data through an internal law enforcement system.
The information was then relayed to Wang through intermediaries.
The investigation also revealed that Wang used similar illegal methods to obtain personal data in an attempt to help his girlfriend recover money she had reportedly lost in a fraud case.
Together with others, they organized efforts to pursue repayment by acquiring private information related to the individuals involved.
Despite denying the allegations, Darren Wang was ultimately found guilty of violating personal data protection laws.
The court ruled that his actions constituted unlawful use of sensitive information.
In the same case, the police officer involved received a sentence of one year and four months in prison.
Other individuals who admitted their involvement were given lighter penalties, including sentences that could be converted into fines.
