Overseasidol.com — Hong Kong singer Alan Tam recently appeared as an ordinary citizen on a local TV news program.
He shared his thoughts on the newly renovated public toilet on Gis Street in Sai Wan, which had long been criticized for poor hygiene.
Tam praised the improvements, saying, “It’s so clean now! You could even take a nap inside,”.
For years, many public toilets in China and Hong Kong carried the stereotype of being dirty, smelly, and poorly maintained.
The Gis Street facility was once infamous for stagnant water and outdated infrastructure, so much that residents avoided it even in emergencies.
In 2023, the Hong Kong Toilet Association ranked it among the city’s most urgently needed renovations.
Now, after upgrades, the toilet has become a positive example of how stereotypes can be challenged through better management and maintenance.
