Overseasidol.com — Recently, Hong Kong director Wong Jing, who now produces short videos, shared stories from the past of Hong Kong’s entertainment scene through his account “Wang Ge Da Jiang Tang”.
In one video, he discussed the reasons behind Leslie Cheung’s tragic decision to end his life at the height of his career.
Wang explained that there were three main causes. First, Leslie had ambitions to become a director and planned a collaboration with a wealthy local producer.
Unfortunately, the producer was suddenly imprisoned during the planning stage, shattering Leslie’s directorial dream and turning him into a target of ridicule among peers and the media.
Second, Wang revealed that Leslie had long struggled with depression.
However, he never received adequate medical treatment. Wang noted that Leslie relied heavily on maintaining a “perfect” public image to mask his inner turmoil.
The third reason was the decline in Leslie’s entertainment career. After losing in a singing competition, he faced harsh criticism.
His role in the film “A Chinese Ghost Story” was even removed, and his acting skills were questioned.
Although he later rose again through performances in “Farewell My Concubine” and “The Phantom Lover,” the emotional damage had already taken its toll.
