A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck southern Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan on Tuesday evening (June 16), shaking the broader Kanto region including Tokyo with intensity up to lower 5 on the Japanese seismic scale.

No major damage or injuries have been reported so far.One of the venues affected was the AKB48 Theater in Akihabara, Tokyo.

At the time, the group was performing their regular theater show, the AKB48 18th Stage “Koko Kara Da”, which started at 6:30 PM local time.

The quake hit around 7:46 PM during the MC segment, specifically during “Mayu no Nayami Banashi” (Mayu’s worries talk).

According to eyewitness reports from fans in attendance and videos circulating on X (formerly Twitter), the theater building shook noticeably.

Earthquake warning alarms sounded immediately, prompting a temporary halt to the MC session. Members and audience members were asked to stay calm.

After about 10 minutes, theater staff announced that the show could resume. However, the MC segment was shortened and not fully continued.

As of now, there are no reports of injuries to any AKB48 members or audience members. The performance continued safely after the brief pause.

Both AKB48 and the theater management prioritized the safety of everyone involved. (Overseasidol.com)
